Kickoff in Baltimore!

Every September, our scholars head back to school and then -just a few weeks after school resumes –  so does Higher Achievement’s Afterschool Academy. Our program is now in full swing in Baltimore. Over 26 weeks, scholars get support with their homework, meet with their mentors, experience our social justice curriculum, elective programming, and more – all in pursuit of admission to top area high schools, and ultimately, college.

For the past two weeks we spent time building culture to ease scholars back into the program, with mentors returning to centers as of yesterday evening. Each day, scholars and staff acknowledge each other and celebrate highlights from center by giving shout outs. In true Higher Achievement fashion, some shout outs are definitely due:

SHOUT-OUT to our whole South Baltimore Achievement Center for already having run 3 days of program with more than 90% of scholars attending. That takes commitment from staff and scholars alike, and recognition is well-deserved!

SHOUT-OUT to Ms. Alyssa and Mr. Travis, the new staff at our East Baltimore site, who have moved through kickoff with tremendous spirit and commitment to the scholars!

SHOUT-OUT to our host and feeder schools, the principals, the teachers, our partners, our families, and our communities who make it possible for us to serve scholars in Baltimore City. We are so grateful!

SHOUT-OUT to our volunteer mentors for showing up in a huge way for their community – whether you are brand new, or returning for year 5 or 6, we see your dedication! Plus, an additional SHOUT-OUT to volunteers from the Jewish Women’s Giving Foundation, T. Rowe Price, Morgan State University, and more for jumping into the work with us this year!

Higher Achievement scholars work hard, grow, and learn all year long. There are still opportunities to join us this year and support the magic of Higher Achievement.

Volunteer with us – mentors make the magic happen by supporting a small group of scholars academically. It takes about 2 hours of your time per week, and the difference you make can last a scholar’s lifetime. Short term opportunities are also available!
