Hill District Scholars Take Home the Trophy!

On April 8, 2017, three of our Hill District Achievement Center scholars, Taylor, Samara, & Quay – team name “The Adorkables” – won Best Design in the SeaPerch regional competition at California University of Pennsylvania!

SeaPerch – a collaboration amongst Navy City Outreach Northeast, Penn State Extension, Allegheny County 4H, and influential community leaders in Pittsburgh focuses on encouraging youth to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). It is a state-of-the-art robotics program that gives teachers and students the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in an in-school or out-of-school setting. How cool is that?!?

The Adorkables were asked to compete at SeaPerch by Dr. Andre Samuels of Citizen’s Science Lab. After seeing a lack of young black girls participating in the competition, Dr. Samuels reached out to Hill District Achievement Center’s Director, Sean Farr, and recruited these three young ladies. The Adorkables beat out over 20 teams to win Best Design!

“They put in a lot of hard work. I am excited that they won.” – Sean Farr

Higher Achievement is proud to have these young ladies represent us at this year’s national championship in Atlanta, GA.

Two of the young ladies pictured, Taylor and Quay, also have the opportunity to travel to DC this summer with #Bridge2DC. If you would like to help sponsor their travels, DONATE TODAY www.bit.ly/Bridge2DC.
