Alumni Spotlight: Carmen

This fall, Higher Achievement alumna Carmen began her freshman year at Loyola University Maryland after applying and being accepted early action. As the recipient of the Loyola Grant, Loyola Scholarship, The Charm City Promise Scholarship, and The France-Merrick Foundation scholarship—which includes a guaranteed internship with the Center for Community Service and Justice at Loyola University—she will have a full-ride plus some for all four years.

At Loyola, Carmen will perfect her talent for drawing and cultivate her desire to help others heal through trauma-informed art awareness.

“My Higher Achievement days were my first taste of what college could be. Talking with my mentor and all the other staff as well as all of the activities helped me realize there can be so much more than the hardships my family was going through back then,” says Carmen. “Standing on the stage at the Brown center giving my poem, ‘A Call To My Generation,’ for Love Out Loud was the highlight of my year.”

Generations of alumni make up the Higher Achievement family, and we are proud to see how alumni like Carmen show up as leaders in their schools, careers, families, and communities.
