Summer Academy in Pittsburgh is intense – 6 weeks of social studies, math, literature, and science plus enriching electives, weekly field trips, and a 3-day/2-night college experience for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade scholars. Here is a recap of some of the scholars’ experiences!
This was the first Summer Academy for 5th grade scholar, King T. When he grows up, King would like to become either the President of the United States or a teacher. His favorite field trip this summer was roller blading at Romp n’ Roll.
“Scholars soak up information when they are actively involved in it. I learned that by being flexible and going with the flow, letting scholars work at their own pace, while keeping them on track … gave me confidence about my abilities to hold their attention and manage the classroom.”
– Ms. Kayce, Summer Teacher and Education Major in College/Future Teacher
Scholar Jehlani A. planned his college courses at the Summer Academy trip to Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He’s interested in applying to the College of Fine Arts.
Olympics of the Mind? Not in Rio, but at Settlers Cabin Park in Robinson Township. It was a battle of the brains and body as scholars competed in academic and physical contests. They competed in three categories—the math bowl, the curriculum quest, and team building exercises. And it was caught on camera by KDKA, who broadcast the story on the evening news.
