Staff Spotlight: Felecia Nelson

At Higher Achievement, we know that relationships are incredibly important to the advancement of our scholars. To highlight the incredible work of our staff, we are asking them to share their own stories on our blog! This month, we interviewed Felecia Nelson. Felicia has worked with Higher Achievement for two years, and is the Manager of Instruction at our new Wilder Achievement Center outside of Richmond, VA.

What were you like as a middle school student?

Felecia: I had a lot going on in middle school. I transferred schools twice and I had a difficult time making friends. In middle school, once I finally settled into one, I was very quiet. It wasn’t until my 8th grade year that I finally realized that it’s okay to be social.

What inspired you to work at Higher Achievement?

Felecia: I am inspired to work at Higher Achievement because I believe that our scholars have the ability to reach their full potential. It is important for middle school students to have a strong support system. The scholars truly appreciate everyone who supports them and they will tell you! Every time a scholar says that they can’t wait for Afterschool Academy or Summer Academy, I know it’s because they appreciate the support that Higher Achievement offers.

What was your favorite subject in school when you were growing up?

Felecia: My favorite subject in school was English. I even went on to major in English Education in college!

What is one of your favorite Higher Achievement memories?

Felecia: Just like every year, my favorite Higher Achievement memory is the Green Apples Awards.

What makes Higher Achievement unique to you?

Felecia: Higher Achievement is unique to me because it is more than an afterschool program. The culture of Higher Achievement is unique. Everyone who joins Higher Achievement as a partner, scholar, or employee is made to feel like family. As an organization, we include our culture in all that we do.

What is your favorite spot in Richmond?

Felecia: My favorite spot in Richmond is Maymont Park. I love history and nature, and Maymont encompasses both! It’s a great place to visit year-round.
