Kevian Finds Strength, Support, and Family in the Higher Achievement Community

Disclaimer: The content of this post is challenging, however, it portrays the authentic voice of our scholar, Kevian, and her life experiences.

My name is Kevian. I am a Higher Achievement scholar. I live in Northeast, DC. I’m 13 years old and I’m in the 8th grade. I live at home with my mom, younger sister, and my uncle.

I am nice, funny, and talented.

When I grow up I want to be to a lawyer. I want to study at George Washington or Harvard. It’s going to take a lot of work to get there. It all starts now, in middle school. I know I need to push myself to be stronger academically. I want to have a family one day and for them to grow up beautiful and strong like I am because that’s how my mom raised me.

If I could change one thing about the world I would stop killing. My brother was shot and killed 3 years ago, he was only 19. We were both at home and he stepped outside for a second, all I remembering hearing was BANG, BANG, BANG – I looked out the window and saw him lying on the ground. I started crying and screaming at him to stay with me. I called 911 and my mom, we got him to the hospital, but he passed away a few hours later. I wish people would just stop killing. I want people to live their lives fully and not die before their time. I want this world to be peaceful and happy. My mom taught me to treat people the way you want to be treated. I wish everyone could do that.

Higher Achievement is a family. I feel really lucky to be able to come here. I have so many people here that care about me and I get to learn new things. Because of Higher Achievement, I know if I believe in myself I can achieve anything.

This giving season we ask you to join us in lifting our scholars, like Kevian. Donate by December 31 and your gift will be matched.  Doubling your impact today!
