DC Metro Graduates the Class of 2013!

Monday, May 6th - Higher Achievement DC Metro graduated 83 eighth-grade scholars, its biggest class ever, on Monday evening at THEARC in Ward 8. They honored two champions with the Green Apple Award: Larry Horowitz ,of Velsor Properties, and Gary Thompson, of Reed Smith. Higher Achievement teams up with Great Schools DC for the High School Placement Fair

October 20, 2012 - Join us for the annual High School Admission Fair on October 20, 2012 at the Columbia Heights Recreation Center. The High School Admissions Fair is your change to meet representatives from DCPS Specialized High Schools, DC Public Charter High Schools, and Parochial and Independent Private Schools. You will also be able to attend workshops to learn about what you and your child need to do now in order to successfully complete the high school admissions process.

Higher Achievement Featured on the Smarter Summers Blog

July 6, 2012 - Higher Achievement is part of Smarter Summers, a three-year initiative supported by the Walmart Foundation and National Summer Learning Association to provide high-quality summer learning experiences to more than 20,000 middle school students across 10 cities. Higher Achievement Wins Deloitte Sprit of Service Grant

Higher Achievement is honored to recieve this year's HandsOn Greater DC Cares Spirit of Service Grant, sponsored by Deloitte, LLP. "This was created to award a nonprofit that is significantly impacting their community. The recipient will use the $10,000 grant to advance volunteerism and service for greater community impact."

The National Summer Learning Association recently released a report on best practices for engaging older youth in summer learning. Higher Achievement was honored to be interviewed and mentioned as one of the best programs in the nation. In this report, the National Summer Learning Association highlights Higher Achievement’s programming opportunities for scholars, including the Literary Love Poetry Performance and Olympics of the Mind, as well as the organization’s data-driven approach to individualized student learning. Looking for Two Summer VISTA Associates - Alumni Outreach and Outreach Coordinator

Higher Achievement is currently hiring Americorps VISTA Summer Associates to assist with our Alumni Support and Outreach efforts.

Member Duties : Summer Associates will teach during a six-week transitional institute designed to prepare students for high school. Instruction will be experiential and interactive in an effort to maximize student learning and to offer an invaluable and rewarding hands-on learning experience; Student learning will be supported through a one to eight teacher-student ratio. SA's will provide instruction in one of the areas mentioned. In addition to direct service teaching and assistance, Summer Associates may provide assistance and support for the Summer Institute in the following areas: 1. Offer additional program development through ideas and feedback 2. Identify and recruit students 3. Develop new/current lesson plans 4. Recruit and train teachers and staff 5. Identify Career Day Hosts and Volunteers 6. Assist with funding, space and other resources 7. Provide incentives and rewards for students and staff 8. Outreach to alumni corps.

Higher Achievement DC Metro is looking for elective teachers

Higher Achievement is looking for elective teachers to provide high quality programming as a part of our 2012 Summer Academy. Specifically, we are seeking individuals interested in teaching: dance, sports, drama, photography, and cooking. We are always open to other courses, if an engaging alternative becomes available. Elective classes will run from June 25th-July 26th, Monday-Thursday, from 2:30-3:30 pm.
