National Out-of-School Time Model Opens to Alexandria Youth
Alexandria, VA—May 2, 2006: The award-winning Higher Achievement Program, which began 30 years ago in Washington, D.C. and serves as a national model for out-of-school academics, will open its doors to Alexandria middle school students this summer. Working in close partnership with the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). This program will provide academic enrichment and preparatory services for high school honors and Advanced Placement coursework to Alexandria youth in grades 5-8 who are motivated to learn but whose achievement is inhibited by one or more risk factors.
Higher Achievement Executive Director Maureen Holla, explained, “We have been welcomed enthusiastically into Alexandria, thanks to ACPS; the Alexandria City School Board; the Alexandria Community Trust; former Sheriff James Dunning, who is one of our board members; and individual philanthropists, including Steve and Susan Shaw and Larry Horowitz. Higher Achievement will engage Alexandria youth with its rigorous and engaging academic program.”
An Alexandria pilot program will begin Wednesday, June 28, at Hammond Middle School and will challenge approximately 60 students during a six-week Summer Academy with daily accelerated classes in math, literature, social studies, and science; weekly educational field trips; academic competitions; and a three-day overnight college visit. Higher AchievementSummerAcademy is designed to prepare students to excel in the upcoming school year. Higher Achievement will continue during the school year with After-SchoolAcademy, where students are paired with academic mentors to receive homework help. They will also participate in artistic studios, a variety of elective courses, academic contests, and field trips. In total, Higher Achievement provides 650 hours of educational opportunities above and beyond the 900 hours that children spend in school each year.
“This is an exciting opportunity for motivated middle school students to receive additional high level academic training after school and during the summer. We are delighted to partner with Higher Achievement in this effort,” commented ACPS Superintendent Rebecca L. Perry. |
