Higher Achievement Scholar Featured at Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington Launch
November 5, 2007 – Higher Achievement scholar, Jasmine Clarke was featured today at the Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington Launch, where Higher Achievement was noted as “one of the best small charities in the Washington, DC region”.
Taking the podium at the program’s end, Jasmine was last, but certainly not least. Introduced to the audience by Barbara Harman, Executive Director of the Harman Family Foundation (the event sponsor), Jasmine wowed the crowd with her strong stage presence, sophisticated confidence, and refreshing sense of humor. The proud 8th grader of the Ward 1 Achievement Center stood tall when she spoke of her academic successes and extracurricular activities, giggled when she reminisced about the opportunity to discuss the state of D.C. education with Deputy Mayor for Education, Victor Reinoso “over lunch,” and eagerly talked about a service learning trip to New Orleans, where she and other Ward 1 scholars assisted with Hurricane Katrina relief.
“In my neighborhood, most kids waste their afternoons playing and hanging outside,” says Jasmine. “They don’t have anyone to push them and expect great things from them. I wish they too came to Higher Achievement! At Higher Achievement, I found a place and a voice. I became a leader.”
The closing of Jasmine’s remarks were greeted with a standing ovation by the audience of more than 300 philanthropists and business leaders at the new Sidney Harman Center for the Arts.
Higher Achievement humbly thanks Barbara Harman and her staff at the Harman Family Foundation, for not only featuring us in this year’s catalogue, but more importantly, for letting us highlight Jasmine Clarke, just one of the 400 amazing scholars that we serve.
