Higher Achievement Featured on Local Radio Show
September 7, 2007 - Higher Achievement was featured today on WMET’s (1160 AM) radio talk show, “Straight Talk,” where critical issues in education are discussed. Host Dr. Willie McElroy allotted more than 20 minutes to Higher Achievement staffers Lynsey Wood Jeffries, Director of Grants and Communications, and Martine Shorter, Ward 7 Center Director, to discuss the academic and social gains that Higher Achievement scholars have experienced over the organization’s 30 years of existence.
More than just the host of “Straight Talk,” Dr. Willie McElroy has served the DC Public School system for 23 years. Having been a teacher, an assistant principal, and a principal, Dr. McElroy is a self-proclaimed “insider” on education. This summer, Dr. McElroy observed Higher Achievement’s Summer Academy at the Ward 7 Achievement Center at Kelly Miller Middle School. He was impressed with the impact of the program under Shorter’s leadership.
In the interview, Shorter and Jeffries explained the rigorous, structured program model, the significant scholastic improvement of scholars, and the overall social development that parents see within their children.
“Not only are the children improving academically,” said McElroy, “but they are also developing a new appreciation for learning. To make strides like this, [the scholars] have to want to be better.”
