June 22, 2007 – Higher Achievement’s Executive Director, Richard Tagle, testified today at a DC City Council hearing about the transition strategy of the Office of State Superintendent for Education. Richard’s testimony emphasized that continued focus on student achievement is critical during this leadership transition.
The testimony emphasized that Higher Achievement’s model produces results. Scholars’ average GPA when entering the program is 2.3, and four years later when they graduate, the GPA is 3.8. All members in attendance, Council Chairman Vincent Gray, Councilmember Mary Cheh (Ward 3), Councilmember Yvette Alexander (Ward 7) and Councilmember Muriel Bowser (Ward 4), remarked about the impressive results and encouraged the program to serve more students. Chairman Gray was particularly impressed with Higher Achievement’s ability to leverage private sector funds and Councilmember Cheh stated that the program, “seems to have unlocked the secrets to help all kids learn”.
Higher Achievement was also interviewed by WAMU 88.5 FM after the testimony.
