Higher Achievement Hosts Olympics of the Mind Event
400 Middle School Students Participate
Alexandria, VA –August 3, 2006: Higher Achievement announced today that the organization hosted a new event as its finale to a summer of learning called The Olympics of the Mind. The inaugural event was designed to showcase the academic and teamwork talents of the more than 400 middle school scholars who have studied all summer at Higher Achievement’s five educational enrichment centers in Washington, DC, and Alexandria, VA. The event was held Wednesday, August 2, from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm at Patrick Henry Elementary School at 4643 Taney Avenue, Alexandria, VA.
“The Olympics of the Mind is the culmination of six weeks of challenging and exciting educational opportunities for Higher Achievement scholars,” said Higher Achievement Executive Director Richard Tagle. “Higher Achievement offers motivated middle school students from underserved neighborhoods access to additional instruction, enrichment activities, and top school placements. The Olympics celebrates a successful summer of learning and energizes scholars for the coming school year and Higher Achievement’s after-school program beginning in the fall.”
The competition at The Olympics of the Mind was fierce. Teams of scholars from all five achievement centers competed in math and Brain Quest competitions and cooperative field games, such as relay races and basketball. Scholars also earned points for demonstrating Higher Achievement’s spirit and culture during the day. The points accumulated by teams were tallied at the end of the event and the team with the most points, the Ward 4 Achievement Center was awarded the Championship Cup. Additional awards were given to the Most Spirited Center (Ward 6) and to banners created by each Center. |
